Draw a shoe

4

I want to do more of these demo style videos as a way to demystify the process of making art. If you’re interested in getting better at visual art, then any way that can help you spend more time with materials is good. Often, the most obvious thing is to draw or paint something that you can look at. Something in your immediate environment. I have written here about some strategies you can use to help you look at things wth drawing in mind. Starting to draw things that you live with, especially organic forms can be a fun way to practice drawing and get you to look closer at your surroundings.

Drawing with something un erasable like a pen or marker is really good. It just releases you from the idea of having to fix or erase stuff. Whatever happens, you’re forced to incorporate it so just try to keep going.

There is no art or talent in trying to draw what you see. Anybody can learn how to do it. I often recommend the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain to those who are interested in drawing but believe they have no aptitude for it. Check it out and follow along here for more demos and tips in the future.

When I do these demos, once students try it for themselves, they say that I made it look much easier than it is. I am never going to tell you that it’s easy. It’s not easy but I find it interesting. If you can also find it interesting, then you will better be able to withstand some of the unpleasantness of any beginning and that will keep you practicing until it becomes easier.
